The design study has come up with about 20 major concepts for the Central National Area.

1. The completion of the Russell corner. It would be a new gateway as the entry point from Sydney, Melbourne and the airport. And would be an exchange with bus and rail terminal.

2. Constitution Avenue would be a high street, an avenue of commerce and apartments.

3. An indigenous park between Kings Avenue and Commonwealth park, contrasting with the formal Commonwealth Park.

4. Kings Avenue to become more like Whitehall with a more ceremonial character flanked by government buildings leading up to Parliament House.

5. Commonwealth Avenue to be more like Washington’s Pennsylvania avenue.

6. To make City Hill more a City Place, a social place where people and retreat and mix.

7. A beginning place at the intersection of the Parliament-to-Mount Ainslie axis with Constitution Avenue.

8. Anzac Parade to continue as the city’s spiritual place celebrating the heroic and sacrifice.

9. The esplanade: to consolidate retail and social components along the esplanade where the parliamentary zone meets the lake.

10. The triangle to contain the icons and value of democracy and to make it more a place for pedestrians with more activities.

11. Old Parliament House to be a forum.

12. The PM’s Lodge to be within the Triangle.

13. Government House to be the on the southern side of Mount Pleasant closing the axis of Constitution.

14. Redevelop Kingston foreshore.

15. An extended diplomatic zone.

16. Premier housing on the lake-side slopes of Stirling Ridge.

17. Civilise Parkes Way with at-level street links.

18. The city could have 700,000 people in 30 to 100 years. A tunnel from Acton to Wentworth Avenue could serve east-west movement.

19. Trams and light rail and a tram loop around the Triangle.

20. A Ponte Vecchio. The one-kilometre bridge would delicately traverse the wetlands and provide a link between the exchange and Queanbeyan. The bridge would have 500 apartments.
