They come off the dual carriageway with their mind in neutral and hit the Lake George stretch.”

The change in the road conditions without a change in driver concentration is what causes the prangs on the Lake George stretch according to Collector’s lone policeman, Constable First Class Jack O’Brien.

Every town has his quirks. In Collector it’s prangs.

Constable O’Brien is in the middle of a three-to-five year posting to Collector.

In the skiing season he can sit in his glassed in verandah and not have to turn on the light because headlights from the bypass will light up the room. At least the sheer volume traffic slows it down. There are more smashes in the skiing season, but fewer bad ones.

His worst was three dead in one car.

“”The car went on to the wrong side of the road and hit a truck,” he said. “”They don’t drive to the conditions. There are far wose roads around here, but no fatalities.”

He is looking forward to a dual carraigeway. With the Olympics ad tourists coming to the capital and Canberrans going to Sydney, it had got to happen, he said.

Aside from the highway, “”Collector’s a great place. Good, genuine people. But the highway’s hell.”
