The original draft territory plan, prepared by the ACT Planning Authority had less public land than the one tabled yesterday.

The new plan has two new areas excised from public land, in Hughes and Campbell. All other changes significantly add to public land.

In the accompanying maps of the most affected suburbs the following keys are used. Single hatch is land that had been earmarked by the old ACT Planning Authority plan for development, which remains available for development. Double hatched is land previously earmarked by the old ACTPA plan for development which has been reclaimed as public land under the new plan. Solid black is land the new plan takes out of public land.

Previously developable land made public land in the plan presented yesterday was as follows (most maps still show these as green areas because they were only identified for development in the earlier plan last year):

Belconnen: Two parcels bounded by Joynton Smith Drive and Sutherland Circuit and Morell Street close to Lake Ginninderra.

Blocks at the corner of College Street and Benjamin Way and the corner of College Street and Eastern Valley way.

Evatt: A parcel off Levine Street abutting South-West Oval and a larger one at the south-western end of Evatt Oval abutting Kellway Street.

Melba: Land either side of Ginninderra Creek at the south-western edge of the suburb _ one bit along the fringe of the suburb and another bit along Ginninderra Drive.

Latham: Latham District Park along Florey Drive is to be made public land. Strips of land along Ginninderra Drive in MacGregor and Latham are to be public.

Turner, O’Connor and Lyneham: Land in adjacent to Sullivan’s Creek near the following streets: Watson, McCaughey, Bent, Hay, Bagot, Vernon, Wattle.

Campbell: The block bounded by Creswell Street and Fairbairn Avenue (opposite the War Memorial) reverts to public land.

Land now taken out of public land is as follows:

Hughes: Land bounded by Webster Street on the east and Yarra Glen and Yamba Drive on the west is.

Campbell: A strip of land long preserved for Monash Drive is formally excluded from public land. It runs south from Fairbairn Avenue to Northcott Drive between Gellibrnd Street and Vasey Crescent.

In making the changes the chair of the committee, David Lamont (Lab) and Trevor Kaine (Lib) stressed the overwhelming public desire, as evidenced by the submissions, to retain the amenity of Canberra. That amenity meant open space and buffer space. The committee recognised that there were economic costs associated with that, but was convinced the community was a ware of those costs and prepared to pay for them.
