Next Tuesday’s census is not quite as onerous as that imposed in 1BC.
As described by the apostle Luke: “”And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.”
(The word “”taxed” meant counting for the purposes of levying tax.)
“”And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem.”
In those days everyone was forced to go back to the city of his or her birth to be counted. These days the census comes to you. But there are still some elements of compulsion.
